How do I know if items on your site are in stock, or if they need to be backordered?

The only time there will ever be a “backorder” at Taylor Security is if you order Emtek (because most of their items are made-to-order), or if you require specific keying that can only be done at the factory.

Besides that every item on our site is considered a “stocked item” that we can ship to you from one of several warehouses around the country. Most of the time if we don’t have a lock in our central location you actually will get the item quicker than if we did have it in stock here because we will ship it from a warehouse that is geographically closer to you.

What is the normal lead time for an order placed on your site?

Our goal at Taylor Security is to ship out every order the same day it's received. However there are some factors that can delay shipment:

- Backorders:

- Shipping: UPS picks up our outgoing deliveries everyday between 3:30 - 4:00 p.m. EST. All orders received after 12 p.m. are subject to be shipped the next business day, including UPS-Red & UPS-Blue orders. The reason being that all of our orders need to be filled, printed, pulled in the warehouse, checked for accuracy, packaged, weighed and shipped by 3:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

- Keying: For most orders that require specific keying please allow at least 1 extra day to ship. All of our in-house key work is on a first-come-first-serve schedule so we cannot guarantee same-day keying. Most of our keying gets done that night, and ships out the following day ... with the exception of extremely large key jobs.

What is a "Bump Key"?

Bump Key- Locksmith Tool

A Bump Key is not an ordinary, everyday item.  Like pickguns and lock picks, a Bump Key is a professional locksmith tool used by a certified, trained professional to bypass a lock and help consumers gain access to their homes or offices.

What steps can consumers take?
Consumers also should take steps to make their home or office unattractive to would-be thieves and burglars.  Some simple steps include making sure entrances and property perimeters are adequately lit; using motion sensors linked to outdoor lighting; and installing a dead-bolt with a high-security cylinder on doors. Consumers also should partner with neighbors to establish neighborhood watch efforts.

What is the Industry's response?

-The inappropriate and illegal use and sale of professional locksmith tools such as "Bump Keys" to gain unauthorized entry to a home or office is an industry-wide issue and one not related to lock performance or quality.  We have been working with other members of the lock industry to address this issue, including BHMA and ALOA, who have both issued public statements on "bumping".

-Working with the lock and locksmith industry and federal and state regulators and law enforcement, we want to regulate access to bump keys and to make the unauthorized use of a bump key a crime.

-As part of our business, we constantly evaluate technologies to offer enhanced security features to fustrate efforts to pick a lock for criminal gain.  We offer a broad range of lock options so customers can select products to create security levels specific to their unique needs.  Schlage products with Primus cylinders are available through authorized locksmiths and dealers nationwide.

-We always advise our customers to view securing their property in a systematic approach consisting of different layers of deterrence and protection.  A lock is just one layer.

Freight
What is your Freight Policy?

All order Shipments will be made via "best way" - in most cases via UPS Ground. Claims for loss or damage must be made within five (5) days of receipt of shipment. Any sales order transacted in full on our Internet site over $500 will be pre-paid in most all cases. Standard pre-paid freight is $1,000 for in-stock items not transacted on our Internet site. Orders shipped outside the 48 contiguous states must be shipped via UPS-Blue (2-day) and are not eligible for pre-paid freight.

Please allow 1-2 working days for all in-stock items to ship via UPS Ground (allow an extra 1-2 days for any item that requires Keying). Most Emtek items will ship in 10-12 working days. UPS is our main freight carrier and UPS-Ground is our standard delivery service. We are integrated with UPS on our web site and have a daily weekday UPS pickup between 3:30-4:00 p.m. EST.

We also offer speedier UPS services including UPS-Blue (2-day) and UPS-Red (Overnight). If UPS-Red (Overnight) is selected on an order received before 1 p.m. on Friday that order will be shipped Overnight for Monday delivery unless "Special Saturday Delivery" is specified by the customer.

Note: All orders received after 1 p.m. are subject to be shipped the next business day, including UPS-Red & UPS-Blue orders. The reason being that all of our orders need to be filled, printed, pulled in the warehouse, checked for accuracy, packaged, weighed and shipped by 3:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Due to increasing demands of sizable orders we need to build in time to make sure your order ships correctly to you the first time.

In addition, all orders that require keying are subject to next business day shipping. Our keying schedules are based on the order in which they were received and since its impossible to predict our keying schedules on a day-to-day basis we ask that you please build in an extra day for any special key work.

We can ship via Fed Ex or DHL only if customers provide us with their shipping account numbers. In the event of a third-party pickup, (other than UPS) please allow 1-2 extra business days to schedule.

Taylor Security can ship to APO addresses via USPS and that feature is enabled on our web site. We also can ship to Canada through our web site via UPS. Taylor Security is not liable for any additional tax or duties on all international orders.

What is an Interior Pack?

An Interior Pack is the inside Knob-or-Lever and Deadbolt Turn that fits on the inside (interior) of the front door Handleset (exterior). We stock Handlesets Less Interior Pack (LIP) because it allows our customers to choose any style handleset (in any finish) for the exterior of their door and combine that with any style knob-or-lever (in any finish) for the interior of your door and house.

The only stipulation is that you have to combine handlesets and interior packs from the same vendor. For instance, if you buy a Schlage Plymouth handleset, then you have to choose a Schlage interior pack.

You cannot combine handlesets and interior packs from different manufacturers.

Below is a link to the various manufacturer handlesets we sell. (Note: Emtek does not sell Interior Packs separately … since their handlesets are made to order you must select the interior pack when you purchase the handleset.)

How do I determine the handing of a lock?

To determine the appropriate handing for your door, look at the hinges from the exterior side of the door. If the hinges are on the left, you require a left-handed lock. If the hinges are on the right, you need a right-handed lock.

What are the different functions of a lock?

Keyed Entry - Both knobs locked or unlocked by key outside or turnbutton inside.

Privacy - Bed/Bath - Both knobs locked or unlocked by emergency key outside or turnbutton inside.

Passage - Hall/Closet - Both knobs always free.

Dummy Pair - Does not turn or perform a function other than for decorative purposes or as a pull.

How do I determine the "Handing" of a door?

To determine the handing of a door always view from outside the room, building, etc. Whatever side the hinges are on is the handing of that door: Left Hand means that the door hinges on the left and Right Hand means that the door hinges on the right.

What is a "Backset"?

The Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center line of the prep in the door. In the U.S. there are two common backsets for residential door locks, 2-3/8" and 2-3/4". Dummy sets have no latch and are surface mounted so you can install a dummy set wherever you choose on the door.

What are the different grades of locks?

To help identify the quality and durability of locksets and deadbolts, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has established three grades or standards for door locks. Each product must pass a series of operational and security tests.

  • Grade 1 - Meets commercial building requirements. Provides the best residential security available. Grade 1 Knobs = 800,000 cycles, 6 door strikes, 360 pound weight test. Grade 1 Deadbolts = 250,000 cycles, 10 door strikes (hammer test).
  • Grade 2: Meets light commercial and exceeds residential building requirements. Exceeds standard residential security requirements. Grade 2 Knobs = 400,000 cycles, 4 door strikes, 250 pound weight test. Grade 2 Deadbolts = 150,000 cycles, 5 door strikes (hammer test).
  • Grade 3 - Meets residential building requirements only. Provides minimal residential security. Grade 3 Knobs = 200,000 cycles, 2 door strikes, 150 pound weight test. Grade 3 Deadbolts = 100,000 cycles, 2 door strikes (hammer test).

What is a Mortise Lock?

A Mortise Lock pertains to a method of installation in which only the face plate and trim of a lock is exposed. The lock case is installed in a pocket in the door or drawer.

By contrast a cylindrical lock is exposed and installs through a bored hole in the door.

How accurate are the product finishes on your site?

Most of the product pictures on our site come from the manufacturers themselves. While we try and post pictures that are as true to their natural appearance as possible ... unfortunately not all finishes translate exactly the same over the Internet. So please be aware that due to the natural differences and limitations of computer displays, product finishes may not always exactly match as shown on your computer screen.

Also please note that Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is a "Live" finish, and will continue to change over time. In addition there is no standard Oil Rubbed Bronze finish and it will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

How come some locks in Oil Rubbed Bronze finish look different than other Oil Rubbed Bronze locks?

Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is a "Live" finish that will change over time. Unlike other finishes (like Brass or Chrome) there is not a standard Oil Rubbed Bronze finish, instead it's a manufactured process that is applied over brass. This is why there are different shades of Oil Rubbed Bronze and why no two Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes will be ever truly be the same. That process will vary even more from manufacturer to manufacturer ... chances are that an Oil Rubbed Bronze lock from one manufacturer will not look exactly like an Oil Rubbed Bronze lock from another manufacturer.

In addition while most of the product pictures on our site come from the manufacturers themselves, unfortunately not all finishes translate exactly the same over the Internet. So please be aware that due to the natural differences and limitations of computer displays, product finishes may not always exactly match as shown on your computer screen.

Can we request Master Lock padlocks to be keyed alike to our existing keys?

Yes, you can request Master Lock padlocks to be keyed alike to your existing keys. Most custom padlock keying requests will have to be special ordered at Master Lock with a lead time of 2-3 weeks. Please Note: The prices listed on our web site are for in-stock padlocks. Prices for specialized keying could change from the prices listed on our site if the order is under "Master Carton Quantity", which varies from padlock to padlock.

What locks can be Keyed Alike?

In order for locks to be Keyed Alike they have to contain the same cylinder keyway.

For instance our Schlage residential locks come stocked with the Schlage SC1 cylinder keyway, while our Kwikset residential locks come stocked with the Kwikset KW1 cylinder keyway. Schlage SC1 and Kwikset KW1 cannot be keyed alike. However, Emtek comes standard with the Schlage SC1 keyway so Emtek locks can be Keyed Alike to Schlage Locks because they both contain the same cylinder keyway.

The "live" HACKER SAFE mark appears only when a web site's security meets the highest security scanning standards of the U.S. government, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and JCB. Sites free of all know vulnerabilities that can be remotely scanned for, such as those earning HACKER SAFE certification prevents over 99.99% of hacker crime.

What is your Return Policy?

We will gladly accept returns and exchanges if we are notified within 30 days of delivery. Please inspect your order upon receipt for damage and accuracy.

In order to expedite your return you must obtain a Return Goods Authorization Number (RGA#) by submitting your request online here on our site. All valid information must be filled out in the Return Form in order to obtain an RGA Number. No merchandise will be accepted for return without an assigned RGA Number obtained from Taylor Security. Once issued RGA numbers are valid for 15 days and must be on the outside of every box sent back. Shipping charges and keying charges are non-refundable and the customer shall pay all freight on returns, unless there is a defect in product or clear error on the part of Taylor Security. Any return goods sent back without an authorized RGA number can be refused.

All returns are subject to a minimum 25% restocking fee and must be in their original boxes, unused and in re-saleable condition. In addition the item packaging must be in its original condition (i.e., DO NOT use wrapping tape to seal original packaging, please put the returned box into another box when shipping back). Putting tape on an original box relegates it to a "used" condition and the item then becomes unsaleable. Any returned merchandise that does not meet all of the above mentioned criteria will be shipped back to the customer at their expense. All Emtek is special ordered and is subject to a minimum 25% restocking fee that cannot be waived.

No deductions from payment will be allowed until the returned items have been inspected and a formal credit has been issued by Taylor Security. Any "defective" material is subject to be returned to the factory for their inspection, and if then deemed defective by the manufacturer, no monies can be issued until the manufacturer credits Taylor Security for the defective merchandise. All closeout items are non-returnable.

Most special order items cannot be returned, depending on the manufacturer. Any special order item - if returnable - is subject to that manufacturer's Return Policy.

All submitted returns are processed by Taylor within one business day. Credits can take from one to 14 days to appear on your account depending on your issuing bank.

What is your policy concerning damaged or defective items?
All shortages must be reported to TS&L within five (5) days of receipt of merchandise. Please check your order as soon as possible. Any merchandise that is lost and/or damaged by the delivering carrier must be reported within 48 hours of receipt. Signing the delivery receipt without noting any damage will nullify the insurance on the order and constitutes receipt of the merchandise in good condition. It will be the purchaser’s responsibility to file the appropriate claim forms with the delivering carrier. In most instances all defective material will be returned to the factory for inspection and no monies can be issued until the factory credits TS&L for defective merchandise.
